How Government Works

How does government really work? What's the difference between theory and practice? Who does what? Who's accountable to whom?

You may be working in government, trying to influence it in some way, or just need to know who’s who and what’s what.

At the end you will:

  • understand the structure of the State sector: Public Service, Crown Entities, SOEs, Offices of Parliament, central agencies
  • understand the principles of accountability, free and frank advice, political neutrality, serving the government of the day, probity, all of government, public interest
  • recognise the importance of relevance of key concepts and documents including inputs, outputs and outcomes, Statements of Intent and Annual Reports
  • understand political processes including the role of Parliament, Select Committees and Cabinet
  • be up to date with changes and issues in the State sector.
