Using the World Cafe model to arrive at essential leadership qualities
One approach we’re beginning to use more is the World Café. Here’s how it works.
Participants at a session sit at round tables of about 6 – 10 people. Each table considers a specific question. The one used in this study was: “What are strengths and characteristics leaders need to address society’s challenges, today and tomorrow?” The participants share ideas at their tables and brainstorm. One person makes notes.
After about 10-15 minutes, participants move to different tables. At the second table the goal is to review the big list left behind by the earlier table group and then move on again.
This approach was used earlier this year by Bill Robertson, chair of the Center for Consciousness and Transformation advisory board (what a title!) and Fran Nurthen from the Mason Institute for Leadership Excellence.
The conclusions of this World Café were that the three most important characteristics of a leader were:
• Integrity • Visionary • Positive Communicator
