Speechwriting books
At a recent Tea and Toast on speechwriting, we mentioned some books that are worth reading. They are:
Jeff Scott Cook, The elements of speechwriting and public speaking, 1989. This is a practical book with plenty of examples.
William Safire, Lend Me Your Ears 1997. A compilation of speeches from ancient to modern.
Max Atkinson, Our Masters' Voices, 1996. A detailed study of UK political speech making.
Meeting warm ups and icebreakers
1. Movie characters. Ask everyone to answer the question:
Which movie character would you like to be and in which movie?
2. First job. Ask everyone to answer the question:
What was your first ever job?
3. What don't we know about you? Ask everyone to write one thing the rest of group doesn't know about them on a piece of paper. Hand the piece of paper to the meeting chair or facilitator. The chair/facilitator then reads one out at a time. The group has to guess who it refers to.
